Winter Georgia means mountain resorts at reasonable prices: Gudauri, Bakuriani, Khatsvali. Your own car beats transfers here — lifts, villages and thermal pools are scattered around, and mountain taxis in winter are a lottery.
Getting to the resorts
- **Gudauri** — 120 km from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road, about 2 hours. The road is cleared regularly — it's the main route north — but heavy snowfall can mean delays at the Cross Pass.
- **Bakuriani** — 180 km from Tbilisi via Borjomi; a calmer, lower road, fine even for front-wheel drive.
- **Khatsvali and Tetnuldi (Svaneti)** — further and harsher: AWD only.
What car do you need in winter
A regular crossover will reach Gudauri and Bakuriani on the cleared road. If you'll drive around the village, climb to slope-side hotels or travel during snowfall — take all-wheel drive: Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson. Snow chains are $10 — in winter mountains they belong in the trunk.
Practical tips
- Fill up before the climb: there are stations on the Military Road, but choices get thin above Pasanauri.
- Park nose-out at hotels — you'll thank yourself after overnight snow.
