Kazbegi by Car from Tbilisi: Georgian Military Road, Stops and the Winter Pass
Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is the most popular trip from Tbilisi, and in your own car it is far more convenient than a tour: stop wherever you like and don't depend on a group.
Route and driving time
Tbilisi — Zhinvali — Ananuri — Pasanauri — Gudauri — Cross Pass — Stepantsminda. About 150 km and roughly 3 hours of pure driving; with stops, plan a full day. The road is paved all the way.
Stops on the way
- Zhinvali Reservoir — turquoise water and viewpoints.
- Ananuri Fortress — right by the road, half an hour to explore.
- Gudauri — the ski resort, cafés and views.
- Friendship Monument — a viewpoint over the gorge, one of the most photogenic spots.
- Gergeti Trinity Church — above Stepantsminda against Mount Kazbek.
Driving up to Gergeti
The road to the church is paved but steep. A regular car can make it in dry weather; in rain, snow or ice an AWD crossover is easier — or leave the car below and walk up (about 1.5 hours).
In winter
The Cross Pass (about 2,400 m) closes during heavy snowfall — sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for a day. Check the forecast and pass updates before leaving, carry snow chains ($10 from us) and choose AWD. More in winter car rental in Georgia.
What the rental agreement prohibits
The Truso and Juta valleys near Kazbegi are off-limits under the rental agreement — insurance does not apply there. Stepantsminda itself and the road to Gergeti are open.
