Why Choose Gudauri?

One of Gudauri’s biggest advantages is the combination of spectacular mountain scenery, modern ski lifts and a wide variety of slopes.

The resort is suitable for both beginners taking their first skiing or snowboarding lessons and experienced riders looking for faster, more challenging terrain.

The Gudauri and Kobi ski area offers more than 80 km of prepared slopes. The resort has a modern lift system, including chairlifts and gondolas. Some routes reach elevations of around 3,000 meters, offering impressive panoramic views of the Caucasus Mountains.

Ski Slopes for Every Level

Gudauri offers wide and relatively gentle slopes for beginners, longer and faster runs for intermediate skiers, and more challenging terrain for experienced riders.

The resort is especially famous for freeriding.

Much of the ski area is located above the tree line, which means that after fresh snowfall, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy large open areas of untouched powder.

When skiing outside prepared pistes, it is strongly recommended to use an experienced mountain guide and always check current avalanche conditions.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Gudauri?

The ski season in Gudauri usually begins in December, depending on snowfall.

The most stable skiing conditions are generally found from the second half of January through March, while skiing is often possible well into April.

January, February and March are therefore the most popular months for a winter holiday in Gudauri.

Spring skiing has its own advantages: more sunshine, longer daylight hours and comfortable temperatures while there is still plenty of snow in the mountains.

More Than Just Skiing

Even if you do not plan to spend your entire holiday on the slopes, there are still plenty of things to do in Gudauri.

Visitors can ride the cable cars simply to enjoy the mountain views, go snowmobiling, try paragliding or spend a relaxing afternoon in one of the restaurants overlooking the snowy Caucasus.

After skiing, much of the activity moves to the hotels, restaurants, bars and apartments of New Gudauri, which becomes especially lively during the peak winter season.

How to Get to Gudauri

Most visitors travel to Gudauri from Tbilisi via the Georgian Military Highway.

The drive usually takes a few hours depending on traffic, weather and road conditions. The journey itself can be part of the experience, with beautiful mountain scenery along the way.

Popular attractions on the route include the Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress and several viewpoints overlooking the Caucasus Mountains.

During winter, it is important to check road conditions before travelling. Heavy snowfall can sometimes cause temporary restrictions on mountain sections of the road.

Is Gudauri Good for Beginners?

Yes. Gudauri is a great place for people who have never tried skiing or snowboarding before.

The resort has ski schools, professional instructors, equipment rental shops and wide beginner-friendly slopes where newcomers can learn the basics in a relatively comfortable environment.

Taking a few lessons with an instructor is usually a much better idea than spending your first day sitting in the snow wondering why anyone ever invented two long boards and called it entertainment.

Gudauri for Experienced Skiers

For confident skiers and snowboarders, Gudauri offers impressive vertical drops, large open mountain areas and a good variety of routes.

Experienced riders can spend several days exploring different sections of the ski area and travel between Gudauri and Kobi.

The opportunity to leave the easier prepared slopes behind and experience the scale of the Caucasus Mountains is one of the features that makes Gudauri different from many smaller ski resorts.

Is Gudauri Worth Visiting?

If you want to combine skiing, dramatic Caucasus scenery, Georgian cuisine and relatively easy access from Tbilisi, Gudauri is one of the best winter destinations in Georgia.

You can visit the resort for two or three days as part of a larger trip around Georgia or spend an entire week skiing and enjoying the mountains.

Beginners can learn comfortably, experienced skiers have plenty of terrain to explore, and even visitors who have no interest in skiing can enjoy the scenery, restaurants and mountain atmosphere.

Gudauri is one of those places that is worth visiting at least once — even if your relationship with skis remains strictly observational.
