4×4 and SUV rental in Georgia: Svaneti, Kazbegi, Tusheti
Half of Georgia's most beautiful places lie beyond the asphalt. Ushguli, the passes of Tusheti, the upper villages of Adjara — they need all-wheel drive and clearance. Here's where 4×4 is a must and where a regular car is fine.
Where you need AWD
- **Svaneti: Mestia – Ushguli.** Asphalt to Mestia, then 45 km of gravel along the cliffs. Our "Mestia and the towers of Ushguli" route — 340 km, 2–3 days, crossover/4×4 only.
- **Kazbegi: Gergeti church.** The road up is concreted but steep — AWD makes life much easier, especially in rain.
- **Tusheti (Abano pass)** — one of the country's most extreme roads, open June–September.
- **Mountain Adjara beyond Khulo** — gravel, fords after rain.
Where you DON'T need 4×4
Batumi–Tbilisi, Kakheti, Borjomi, the Imereti canyons, Vardzia — all asphalt, any car from the fleet works. Don't overpay for an SUV on classic routes.
