Driving to Svaneti in a Rental Car: Route, Time and What to Bring

13.07.2026
One of Georgia's most beautiful routes — from the sea in Batumi to the medieval towers of Ushguli. How to drive it in a rental car without surprises.

Svaneti is a mountain region in north-west Georgia with 11th-century towers, glaciers and Europe's highest permanently inhabited village. The easiest way to get there is by car: public transport is infrequent, and the views start right from the road.

Route and driving time

The classic way: Batumi → Zugdidi → Enguri Dam → Mestia → Ushguli. Batumi to Mestia takes about 5–6 hours, and Ushguli is another 2 hours on a gravel road. Plan at least 2–3 days: a round trip in one day is too much and misses the point.

Which car you need

The road to Mestia is good asphalt — any crossover will do. The Mestia → Ushguli section is a gravel mountain road: under the rental agreement it is allowed only in an AWD/4×4 car with at least 180 mm ground clearance. For this route our customers usually take a Subaru Forester or Outback.

What to bring

Warm clothes (it is cool in the mountains even in summer), cash (villages do not always take cards), offline maps and a charged phone. Fill up in Zugdidi — there are few petrol stations further on.
