Driving in Georgia (country): speed limits, cameras and fines

Driving in Georgia is comfortable: roads are good, police are polite, and the rules are familiar. But there are a LOT of cameras, and fines arrive silently. Here is what matters.

Speed limits

• Cities — 60 km/h.
• Outside built-up areas — 90 km/h.
• Motorways — 110 km/h.

Signs may lower the limit on specific stretches — in mountains and villages trust the signs, not habit.

Cameras — the main thing to know

Georgia has hundreds of cameras: speed, lanes, seat belts, phone in hand. No officer will stop you — the fine simply appears in the database days later. Typical amounts start around 50 GEL for moderate speeding and grow steeply for serious violations.

Alcohol — strictly zero

Georgia's formal threshold is minimal, and with a rental car the rule is simple: zero. Under our contract, driving intoxicated means a 2,000 GEL fine plus all related costs — and insurance does not apply.

Central zones in Batumi and Tbilisi are paid (apps or meters). Parking fines are small, but towing is possible — don't leave the car under prohibition signs.

Belts, phones, lights

Seat belts for everyone, phone in hand is a fine, low beams during the day are a good habit in mountains and tunnels.
