Bakuriani — Georgia's Family-Friendly Ski Resort

Unlike high-altitude Gudauri, Bakuriani feels calmer and more family-oriented: many beginners, families with children, instructors and relatively easy slopes — but there are areas for experienced skiers too.
Ski slopes
The resort has three main areas: Didveli, Kokhta and Mitarbi — 23 runs totalling about 26.8 km and 17 lifts, from beginner slopes to more difficult descents.
- Didveli — the most popular area, good for beginners and intermediates. The top station is at about 2,702 m with panoramic views. It gets busy in high season, so come when the lifts open.
- Kokhta — for confident skiers and snowboarders; the top is at about 2,157 m, with intermediate and advanced runs and off-piste options.
- Mitarbi — next to Kokhta, about 10 km of runs; together they form one large ski area.
When to go
The season usually runs from December to March, sometimes into April if there is enough snow. January and February have the best snow but also the most visitors, so book accommodation early for New Year and February.
For beginners and families
There are ski schools, private instructors, rental shops and training slopes, so even first-timers are fine. Start on the training areas and Didveli before moving to Kokhta. Besides skiing there are sledges, horse rides, snowmobiles, an ice rink and a mountain toboggan of about 960 m in the Crystal area — good for groups where not everyone skis.
How to get there
Bakuriani is about 180 km from Tbilisi. By car: about 2 h 25 min from Tbilisi, 2 h 35 min from Kutaisi and 4 h 45 min from Batumi. In winter the time depends on weather and road conditions; after heavy snowfall winter tyres and snow chains help.
Bakuriani and Borjomi
Combine Bakuriani with Borjomi — famous for its mineral water, Central Park and forest trails. The two are linked by the narrow-gauge "Kukushka" railway through the scenic Borjomula valley.
Where to stay
There is everything from family guesthouses to modern hotels and apartment complexes. In winter check not only the price but the distance to your lift, plus heating, parking, Wi-Fi and a kitchen or restaurant.
Bakuriani or Gudauri?
Choose Bakuriani for children, beginners and a calm family holiday with forests and a small-town feel. Gudauri suits experienced skiers who want big vertical, long runs and freeride.
Driving to Bakuriani in winter
In winter an AWD crossover is the easier choice, and snow chains can be rented together with the car. More in our guide to car rental in Georgia in winter.
