Accident or Police Stop in Georgia: What to Do in a Rental Car
Trouble on the road is rare, but it is worth knowing the steps in advance — they decide whether insurance covers the damage.
If you have an accident
1. Stop, switch on the hazard lights and place the warning triangle. If anyone is hurt, call 112 (the single emergency number).
2. Do not move the cars unless they block traffic or someone is in danger — wait for the patrol police. Call 112 to report the accident.
3. Take photos: car positions, damage, plates, road markings.
4. Call the rental company right away — we will tell you what to do and help with translation.
5. Wait for the police report. Without a police report the insurance does not cover the damage — this is in the rental agreement.
6. Do not sign documents you don't understand, and don't settle with the other driver "without the police".
A parking scratch or damage with no other party
Even minor damage should be reported to the police and to the rental company the same day — otherwise the repair may be charged to you. With full no-excess cover, you pay nothing for the damage when it is reported correctly.
If the police stop you
- Georgian police are polite and do not take bribes — never offer money.
- Show your passport, driving licence and rental agreement (the car documents are in the car).
- Fines are issued officially and paid online or at a bank; camera fines go to the car's plate and we forward them to the renter.
- If you don't understand what is said, call the rental company — we will translate.
What not to do
- Don't drive after drinking — the limit is effectively zero, and the insurance stops applying.
- Don't leave the scene of an accident.
- Don't repair the car yourself at third-party garages.
