Mtskheta — Georgia's Ancient Capital and a Must-See!
15.09.2026
Mtskheta is Georgia's ancient capital and one of the country's main historical and spiritual centres. It lies about 20 km from Tbilisi, where the Aragvi and Kura (Mtkvari) rivers meet.

Mtskheta's history goes back more than two thousand years. Here stand the famous Svetitskhoveli, one of Georgia's most important Orthodox cathedrals, and Jvari Monastery on the hill above, with a superb view of the town and the meeting of the two rivers. Mtskheta's historic monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For visitors, Mtskheta is a great trip from Tbilisi for a few hours or a whole day: old streets, Georgian food, monasteries, mountain views and many interesting places nearby.
With a rental car it is especially easy: Tbilisi → Mtskheta → Jvari → on towards Ananuri and Kazbegi makes a great route along the Georgian Military Highway.
